Ch. 14

This chapter discusses Old English and Middle English and their connections to modern English and other languages.  It's amazing how history affects language so greatly.  I was also really interested in how spellings and words change over time.  My husband and I were talking about it and wondered who was the first person to spell the as ye?  It's also crazy that spelling conventions weren't always very important.  I suppose it's because there were fewer literate people, so those who were literate could kind of follow their own rules.  I know this wasn't in the chapter, but it was very interesting in the video to see the spelling differences on the very same page of the Solomon story.  I can't remember the word (maybe quik?), but I know that i and y were interchangeable.  It seems like if someone would be willing to go to all the trouble to write out Scriptures by hand, they would have considered it important to stick to some writing norms... but I guess that wasn't the case.  :)

  1. it's interesting for me to learn the linguistic change/history of English language from the book too.
