I missed this class because I was at the NABE conference in Austin, TX (National Association of Bilingual Education). But I did listen to the recording this weekend, and it was SO interesting! I loved learning about Chinese this week, even though I know I made a lot of mistakes on the assignment! :( I guess I need a Chinese tutor, ha ha! I thought that Chia-Fang did a wonderful job explaining the components, and Ling's input was also very helpful. Don't worry, Leping, I know you would have been great too if you hadn't had technical issues. :) The whole class and assignment made me wish even more that I could come take Leping's Chinese class at MSU! I know it would be my favorite class.
Besides being fascinating, it is good to look at morphology of other languages because I think it provides a very important awareness to ESL teachers of the kinds of morphological backgrounds our students may have. It could give us a better understanding of why our students make particular errors, or help us realize why some aspects of English morphology might be challenging to students whose L1 is morphologically very different.

Hi Carly, thanks for saying so.
ReplyDeleteRight, it will be helpful for teachers' teaching and students' learning if teachers have a sense of the comparison between the target language and students' native languages.
lol, Thanks Carly!
