Class 2/12/09

In this class we focused on different kinds of writing systems for various languages: logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic. We broke into groups and described the characteristics of our assigned writing system. My group also talked about implications for teaching, which was interesting, but I can't remember if we were actually supposed to do that! :)

In the whole group, we discussed various things, but what I was most interested in was my Chinese-speaking classmates' input about learning an alphabetic system with a logographic L1. I think it would be an interesting study to examine how people from the three different kinds of writing systems learn the other kinds of systems, what difficulties they have, etc. Maybe because syllables, phonemes, and words are universal, it's not so difficult for people? Or maybe it depends on which language you are learning and which background you have?

  1. Very interesting ideas Carly. Maybe you can do another thesis on this ;)

  2. I was just thinking ... APP topic! Words may be universal but syllables (Syllabic) and phonemes (Alphabetic) may not be.
